Kelli Haynesworth LOC '05
On Wednesday, February 9, 2005, Kelli Haynesworth, a graduate of Philadelphia OIC's Learning Opportunities Center, was honored for her accomplishments of overcoming extreme adversities and obtaining her GED, by the Pennsylvania Department of Education at a legislative luncheon in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In attendance were her son, Phillip Mitchell Jr., her finance, Phillip Mitchell Sr., and the staff of Philadelphia OIC, which included Robert Nelson, President & CEO, Kevin Cafferky, Controller, and the Learning Opportunities Center (LOC) staff.
Dada Simdjama Philadelphia Opportunities Inn '05
Dada Simdjama graduated on July 21, 2005 from the Opportunities Inn Housekeeping program. Dada came to the United States in December 2003 from Congo, West Africa in search of a better life for her family. Upon arriving in the U.S., Dada was employed as an Assembler Finisher at a window company. Dada decided to come to OIC to receive hospitality training in hopes of finding a job with better benefits. Dada completed her internship at the Doubletree Hotel where she was then hired as a housekeeper. Dada is extremely grateful to the staff for finding her a better paying job, with great medical benefits.
Mark Fisher Philadelphia Opportunities Inn '04
Mark graduated from the Culinary Arts Program in July 2004 with honors. He completed his 50-hour externship with Chef Georges Perrier at Brasserie Perrier and then was hired by Chef Perrier as a Pantry cook and is currently Chef Manager with Newport Food Service in Malvern, PA. As a teenager, Mark ran the streets of Philadelphia. And eventually wound up serving a 9 year prison sentence at the state penitentiary for robbery. While in prison, Mark received help for drug and alcohol issues. Upon being released from prison, Mark attended Philadelphia OIC's Opportunities Inn. Mark is a regular speaker at OIC, informing the students of the opportunities that will be available to them in the future.
Nicole Chaplan Opportunites Inn '03
Before OIC, Nicole worked for Federal Security Company for 7 years, while caring for her mentally challenged child who suffered from Autism. along with her other 2 kids, it became difficult to work a flexible schedule. She realized that she needed a steady schedule so she decided to attend Philadelphia OIC's Housekeeping training program. Upon completing her intership at the Windsor Hotel, she was offered a Front Desk position but due to the inability to work a flexible schedule she declined. OIC forwarded her resume to the Embassy Suites Center City and she was hired as a Suite Attendant, where she was employed for 2 years. Presently, Ms. Chaplan is employed at the Loews Hotel as a Room Attendant.
Daren Merritt Philadelphia OIC Futures '04
Daren successfully completed training in office technology. He acquired typing and computer skills that enabled him to complete an intership with the Mental Health Association, Southeastern Pennsylvania (MHASP). Daren impressed the staff during his intership and wsa hired as a full-time employee. Additionally, Daren attended class at the Philadelphia LOC program in pursuit of his GED. Through the combined efforts of Daren's dedication and support form LOC and Futures Staff, he is a productive citizen.
